Holland, Michigan: Staybridge Suites

December 2019, King bedroom suite #401, Weekdays, 2-nights

Sunrise from guestroom 401 at Holland Staybridge Suites

Reservations, arrival, platinum perks

I had reserved a one-bedroom king guestroom, as the price was good, and I did not want to hope for an upgrade from a studio suite. I think the only room type better than this for an upgrade, would be a two-bedroom suite, which we did not really need for the two of us. This was not offered, and we did not ask. The 500 platinum bonus points posted to my account shortly after check-in. The check-in process was efficient, and the associate was friendly.

King one bedroom suite #401

This suite is located on the top floor in the corner, which is exactly my profile preference. The setup was comfortable and spacious. I was glad we had a top floor guestroom, as I had read reviews from other guests about the noise overhead. We did not hear any bothersome noise during our stay. The only noise we heard was an occasional door closing in the hallway, and the noise by the trash dumpster in the mornings. The first morning, we heard the dumpster being emptied, and the second morning, the person plowing the parking lots parked in that area. Neither of these noises bothered us much, and we fell right back asleep. I only mention this, in case you are a super light sleeper and want to stay away from this corner of the building. Although we were near US-31, we did not hear any traffic noise.

The ice maker was not on in the fridge when we arrived, and the front desk agent gladly fulfilled my request for ice when we first arrived. Coffee, condiments, two dishwasher tablets, dish soap, paper towel, and dish cloths were provided. We not have housekeeping come to our room, and we were able to get a second day's supply of coffee from the front desk.

Bolingbrook, Illinois: Residence Inn by Marriott Chicago Bolingbrook

June 2019, Weeknight (Wednesday), 1-night, King studio #414

Platinum perks and check-in

I arrived before check-in time (around 2PM), and then waited in the lobby for about an hour for my room. This was not a problem, since I was able to work on my laptop, although it was surprising. Usually, after I have checked in on the Marriott app, I get a text early in the morning telling me my room is ready way before check-in time. Other than the standard Platinum bonus points, I did not receive any extra perks for my status. I received two candy bars, after I spun the wheel behind the check-in counter, and that is the space it landed on. All guests get to spin the wheel when checking in.

Guestroom 414

I loved this guestroom. It was clean, comfortable, and spacious. The photos on the hotel website are a good representation of the actual guestroom.

The desk area was large, and the view out the window faced northwest. The kitchen contained everything needed.

Savannah, Georgia / Homewood Suites Savannah Historic District/Riverfront

November-December 2016, Weekdays, 4 nights, 2-Queen 1-bedroom suite 502

Sunrise from suite 502

Diamond perks and arrival/check-in

We initially reserved a king balcony riverfront studio with points for one night (this was the best points room type available), and we were paying for a king studio riverfront without a balcony the other three nights of our stay. Shortly before our stay, we learned the pool and rooftop area had been closed for renovations, so we wanted to make sure we could stay in a guestroom with a balcony, and it would be even better, if we did not have to change rooms during our stay. I checked the Hilton website for the "upgrade with points" option, and I called the hotel a couple of times before our arrival to ask about this. I was told they w/could not upgrade us to a balcony guestroom for the paid nights, so I paid the difference for a 2-queen, 1-bedroom suite (there were no king balcony rooms available). The employe implied that she could not give me an upgrade for both reservations.

We arrived in Savannah before check-in time. After we parked in town (more info about this later), we stopped at the front desk to find out when our room would be available. The agent said our guestroom was already available; however, she gave us keys for a king studio balcony, and she did not mention the second portion of our stay. I had referenced both confirmation numbers in my reservation comments, and I had asked the hotel to tie the reservations together when I called. Additionally, I had been told we could have the queen bedroom balcony guestroom the entire stay, and that this could possibly become a king guestroom and/or higher floor room, if one became available before our arrival. I mentioned all of this to the front desk agent after I asked about the guestroom details (she had not provided any information), when she handed me the keys. She studied the computer a few moments, and then she coded new keys for suite 502. I am not sure if she checked for a higher floor or king balcony room, as she did not say anything more about the guestroom. She provided information about the hotel food & beverages, and she asked if we had used valet parking. She did not recognize my status.

Sacramento, California / Homewood Suites by Hilton Sacramento (SMF) Airport-Natomas

September 2016, Weekday, 1-night, King Studio #309

I stayed in this Homewood Suites in 2012, when it was brand new. The guestroom I had this stay was pretty much the same as the one I had last time.

Arrival and check-in

When I arrived, the front desk agent offered me bottled water. I received another bottle of water and Milano cookies in the guestroom.

Fort Wayne, Indiana / Homewood Suites by Hilton

August 2016, Weekday, 2-nights, King Studio Suite #502

A few days before this stay, I was reviewing the map more closely and realized I had stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn next to this Homewood Suites in 2014. I was glad I had double-checked my directions, because although the address for both properties is on Highway 24, the entrance is from Ellison Road. I usually have Gold status with Hilton; however, I recently took advantage of a promotion Hilton was offering, and my status had been upgraded to Diamond before this stay.

Arrival and status perks

I did pre-check-in on the Hilton site and chose my room before my arrival. I do not understand why the app does not show a Diamond member choice rooms or upgrades. My profile says high floor, away from elevator. I also enter preferences for top floor and corner room in my comments. The room chosen for me when I started the check-in process was 301. Suite 301 is a corner room; however, this hotel has six floors. I did not check to see how many floors were in the hotel when I checked in. I was able to bring up room choices as high as floor five, and I mistakenly assumed that was the top floor.

When I arrived around 5:30 p.m., I asked the front desk agent if the room I had chosen was a good choice. I told her I liked to have a room in a quiet area away from activity. She said it was as good as any, and then she added that she could not guarantee anything about the quietness. Wow, really?! I do not expect hotels to guarantee quietness; however, that unnecessary remark from her made me feel like an unvalued guest from the start. Usually, when I inquire about a room in a quiet area, the employee makes sure the guestroom does not have a connecting room door, is away from the elevator, and sometimes he or she tells me to let them know if I hear anything disturbing, and they will take care of it.

Water received at check-in
The front desk agent recognized my Diamond status as an afterthought at the end of the check-in process, and she offered me bottled water. The guest who had checked in before me must have been a regular because he seemed to know the front desk agent well, and she had given him a special bag and bottles of water. The bag he received was not one of the on-property amenity bags with water and a snack, it was a special larger bag that the agent had gotten from the back room. It is possible she offered me the water because she knew I had observed the activity before me.

Suite 502

I loved the layout and location of this suite, although the room did not smell fresh. I could not tell if the scent was from cheap air freshener trying to mask odors, or what it was from. Fortunately, it was tolerable. The ceiling fan was on, and I left it on, along with the bathroom fan, for my entire stay, in an attempt to circulate and freshen the air. The windows did not open.
View from entrance
Things I liked about the suite layout: there was a kitchen table with two chairs, along with a desk and chair (some studio suites have a combination with only one desk/table), the bed was around the corner from the entrance door (away from activity in the hall outside the door), there was no connecting room door, and the bathroom contained a large walk-in shower.

Miami, Florida - MIA / Residence Inn Miami Airport

February 2016, Weekend, 2-nights, King/queen 2-bedroom suite #3620

This was our second time staying in the Residence Inn Miami airport, and our third time staying at the Miami airport Marriott hotel complex. Previous reviews can found at the following links: Residence Inn February 2013, and Marriott February 2011.

view of kitchen in suite from living room

Arrival experience and shuttle ride

We had taken the Tri-rail from the Ft. Lauderdale airport, and we had hoped the hotel shuttle bus would pick us up at Miami Central Station. I called the Residence Inn before we arrived to ask if we could be picked up at the station, and the agent said we needed to go to the airport to get the shuttle bus. To get to the airport from the station, we needed to take the MIA mover, and then wait there for the hotel shuttle. The Residence Inn is less than 1½ miles from the train station, which would have been walkable for us without our luggage. The shuttle bus runs regularly between the airport and the hotel complex. All of the Miami airport hotel shuttles pick up passengers and drop them off at the departure level. There is not a designated pick up area in the airport. Passengers walk out to the curb to watch for the hotel shuttle bus needed, and then flag it down. We have been through this process many times at MIA, and it is always chaotic. Fortunately, we have never missed our bus! Not that we know of, anyway. We have waited more than 15 minutes sometimes, so it is possible we missed a shuttle before and did not know it.

When the shuttle bus arrives at the hotel complex, the bus stops at the Marriott first. I suggest disembarking then, if you do not have much luggage. We initially stayed on the bus when it arrived; however, after the driver had disappeared with no comment for over five minutes, we grabbed our luggage and got off. We walked to the Residence Inn behind the Marriott, and had just finished our initial check-in encounter when the shuttle bus arrived with the remaining guests.

I had considered staying at Element Miami Airport because it is less than ½ mile from the train station, and they had said they would pick us up at the station. The Element is a new hotel; however, the Residence Inn has better dining and pool options, we were going to be staying two nights, and we had received a room upgrade before our arrival.

Chicago, Illinois / Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago-Downtown

December 2015 - January 2016, Weekday-weekend, 3-nights, King 1-bedroom #1207

view from suite 1207
The Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago-Downtown was undergoing renovations at the time of our stay. Our stay was satisfactory because we had been able to book a reasonable rate. If we had paid a high price for our room, we would have been disappointed. This building was in need of an update, and I am sure it will be fabulous when the renovations are complete.

Reservation, arrival experience, Gold status perks

I had a couple of questions, so I called to speak with someone a few days before our stay. My call was transferred to an offsite service. The person I spoke with sounded willing to assist me; however, I did not feel confident that our needs would be met after the call. The day before our arrival, I browsed the online check-in process. The highest floor guestroom available for online check-in was on floor 8, and this hotel has 19 floors. I also saw that a king bedroom was now the same price as the king studio we had booked, so I decided to call the hotel again. This time, I spoke with someone directly in the hotel, and she changed our guestroom to a 1-bedroom suite.

On the day of our arrival, we had taken the Amtrak to Chicago in the morning. We arrived at the hotel around 10:30 a.m. We went to the 6th floor where reception is located, and spoke with the front desk agent to let her know we were in town. She said check-in is at 4:00 p.m., and she took my cell phone number to call us, if our room became available before then. We checked our bags with the bellman on the ground floor, and our guestroom was ready shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Carmel, Indiana / Staybridge Suites Indianapolis-Carmel

December 2015, Sunday night, 1-night, King one-bedroom #216

I booked a queen studio room with points for this stay, as the king one-bedroom option was not available to book with points.

Status perks and check-in

It was dark before we arrived, and I could not find any dining options near the hotel on my phone or GPS, so I called to ask if there was anything nearby. The employee who answered the telephone said that the closest restaurant was about 1½ miles away. I also inquired about an upgrade at this time, and she looked up my reservation. The employee said she could give us a one-bedroom suite, which I happily accepted.

When we arrived at Staybridge Suites Indianapolis-Carmel, in addition to the guestroom upgrade, I was offered the same Platinum perk I had been offered at the Holiday Inn Express in Bowling Green, KY--trail mix snack and a bottle of water, or 500 bonus points. I chose the points, which were posted to my account within a week. As the front desk agent handed me my key packet, she provided information about the hotel, and directions to our guestroom on the second floor.

Staybridge Suites guestroom #216

This guestroom was spacious, clean, and comfortable. We were happy with our stay in this hotel, and I would choose to stay here again.

The kitchen area inside the entrance contained a full-size fridge with ice maker, electric burners, microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher, dishcloths, and a full roll of paper towel. The cupboards were stocked with items like salt and pepper, coffee condiments, dishes, utensils, and hand dishwashing soap.

A bar with two comfortable seats was located at the edge of the kitchen area before the living room. A basket on the bar held a package of popcorn and coffee for the coffeemaker.

Southfield, Michigan / Embassy Suites Detroit - Southfield

March 2015, Weekend, 1-night, King suite #730

I had read a few reviews for this Embassy Suites that were not very good. Again, we had found an inexpensive rate, and this was one of the stops on our trip, which would help me maintain Gold status with Hilton. We had stayed at the Embassy Suites at the Detroit airport a few years ago, and it was nice; however, that location was out of our way, and the cost was more. We hoped for a clean, comfortable guestroom at this hotel, and we were not disappointed. I would choose this hotel again.

Status perks and check-in, including online check-in

I did online check-in with Hilton for the first time the day before we arrived at this hotel. I had looked at online check-in before our stay at the DoubleTree Port Huron; however, I did not fully understand the process, so I did not complete it then. At the DoubleTree, the room assigned to me had been 207, and I did not go through the process far enough to see that I could have chosen a guestroom on a different floor. I had been afraid of choosing a poor room and not being able to get out of it.

When I started online check-in for the Embassy Suites Detroit - Southfield, I had been pre-assigned a room on the second floor, just like at the DoubleTree. I was confused by this because my Hilton Honors profile says high floor. I went through the process further this time, and I was able to see guestrooms on floors up to floor 7. Although most Hilton Honors or executive floors are on higher floors, I have stayed in a couple of hotels that have them on a lower floor, so I decided to call the hotel. I explained what I was doing, and I asked if they have a specific floor for Hilton Honors members. I was told that they do not have this yet because the guestrooms were being remodeled. I asked if any of the guestrooms had already been remodeled, and I was told no. The agent said they are working on floors 8 and 9, and she would suggest floor 7. I thanked her, and then completed online check-in. I chose guestroom 730 because it was a corner room, and it did not show a connecting room door.

Fort Myers, Florida - RSW / Homewood Suites by Hilton Fort Myers Airport/FGCU

November 2014, Weekend/Weekday, 1-night, King 1 Bedroom Suite #506

Status perks and check-in

The check-in agent was friendly and accommodating. We received an upgrade to a king bedroom suite, a welcome bag with a few candies, and Pepperidge Farms cookies and bottled water in the guestroom. I also received the 250 bonus points I have chosen on my profile.

Our key did not work when we got to the guestroom, so I returned to the front desk. Both staff members apologized and exchanged my keys. They said they had a bad batch of keys, and the bad ones must not have all been tossed out when they were replaced. The agent who had checked me in offered to return to the guestroom with me to make sure we did not have any further problems. I politely declined this offer since they seemed to know what the trouble was caused from and had given me new keys. The replacement keys worked fine when I returned to the suite.

Guestroom #506

This guestroom is located on the top floor with a view of the nature area/pond behind the hotel. It has a connecting room door in the living room, and a separate bedroom. There was a large window in each room, although neither window could be opened. There were two thermostat controls; one in the living area, and one in the bedroom.

Naples, Florida / Staybridge Suites Naples - Gulf Coast

November 2014, Weekday, 2-nights, Queen Studio #221

Status perks and check-in
As a Platinum member I was given the choice of 500 bonus points or a snack at check-in, and I received a coupon for 15% off at the "chickee" bar. I did not receive a room upgrade. This hotel has four floors, and we were assigned guestroom 211. I always request a room on the top floor, so I inquired whether a room was available on a higher floor, or if the room I had been assigned was an upgraded room. I was told yes, and that it is a renovated room, so I said that would be fine.

When we arrived at guestroom 211 our keys did not work. I returned to the front desk, and I was told that 211 was the incorrect room number, and we had been assigned guestroom 221. A different employee assisted me this time. She corrected the room number on the key packet and returned our keys. I asked if this guestroom is the same as 211, and the agent said yes.

Guestroom 221
This is a queen studio guestroom near the center of the hall facing the parking lot. It was not an upgrade from the type of room I had booked, and my husband was disappointed that it did not at least face the pool/courtyard area. The guestroom had been recently renovated.

The kitchen area in the guestroom contained a small dishwasher, full size fridge, microwave, 2-burner electric stovetop, and a coffeepot with supplies. The ice maker in the freezer worked very fast. Often, when we stay in an extended stay property like this, it takes a long time for the ice maker to start working. Dishwasher detergent and dishwashing liquid was also provided. Although the detergent holder in the dishwasher did not latch properly, the dishes looked clean after washing. Dishes, saucepans, utensils and silverware were in the cupboards, although there was only one spoon provided. A package of microwave popcorn was provided.

A desk and chair were positioned between the kitchen and living room area. There was plenty of workspace at the desk, it was well lit, and there were several outlets. The desk chair was uncomfortable after only a short period of time. Additional counter space with a lamp was mounted on the wall across from the desk. The Internet connection speed was good in the guestroom and by the pool.

The sitting area contained a sofa bed, footstool, floor lamp, and a large flatscreen TV on an armoire. The TV swiveled and it was easily visible from all areas of the guestroom. The sofa was comfortable. There were two large windows with screens in the guestroom, which could be opened a couple of inches.

The queen size bed was comfortable, and the bedding was good quality. A nightstand and lamp were located on both sides of the bed. A full length mirror was hanging on the wall between the bed and bathroom area.

The bathroom contained a walk in shower and toilet. Our toilet became plugged the first day, and we could not use it overnight until someone came and plunged it the next day. Later during our stay, we observed an employee in the hallway with a plunger on his way to another guestroom, so it appeared we were not the only guests who experienced plumbing problems. We had to hold the toilet handle down to flush the toilet, and I thought the toilet by the fitness center was also going to stop up when I used it during our stay.

The vanity in our guestroom was located outside of the bathing area across from a closet with mirrored doors. The closet contained hangers, a folding luggage rack, bedding, and an iron and ironing board.

This guestroom is well soundproofed. I did not hear any guests overhead, and we did not hear any noise from outside. The entrance door was not as well soundproofed as the walls, although the hallway noise from guests was minimal.

We did not receive any coffee when our room was cleaned during stayover, so I went to the front desk to request some. The agent gave us a packet; however, I learned that coffee is only provided at check-in. That was a new experience for me. The only time we have stayed in a hotel that did not replenish the coffee during stayover was in different countries.

Food & Beverage
This hotel offers complimentary breakfast everyday, and an evening social on Tuesday - Thursday. Coffee and tea is available in the dining area all day.

Juice and milk was available in the morning, although there was no fat-free milk. Some of the breakfast food items were egg and cheese fold-over omelets one morning, and scrambled eggs the next. Pork sausage was served the first morning, and ham was served the second day. There were assorted breads, muffins, and bagels. I did not try any of the bread products because there did not appear to be any whole-grain choices. Bananas, oranges, cut fruit, yogurt, and a waffle maker were also available. I do not recall the cereal and/or oatmeal choices for sure.

In the evening, grilled burgers and hot dogs were served one night, and meatball subs the next evening. Lettuce with tomatoes and dressing were available both evenings, as well as condiments for the burgers/sandwich items. Plain potato chips were served both evenings. Beverage choices included wine and beer from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Bartender Mike was fabulous!

This is the only Staybridge Suites I have stayed in that has a bar. The chickee bar is located outside by the pool area, and typical bar beverages were available with a different special each day. Margaritas were on special for $4 one of the days we were there, so we tried one, and it was very good. The bar opens at 3:00 p.m.

Pool and whirlpool tub
The outside pool and whirlpool tub are located by the chickee bar. We did not use the whirlpool tub in the evening because there were many people in the bar area both nights of our stay, and the tub is located close to the bar. We swam in the pool and used the whirlpool tub during the day, and we thought the water temperature was good. Most of the courtyard area was sunny until about 3:00 p.m., and then it became mostly shady. There were several loungers and tables with umbrellas around the pool, and between the bar and pool. The area was clean and well maintained.

Misc.
There is no charge for parking at this hotel, and Internet service is free. There is no charge to use the laundry facilities, which were located on the second floor. There is a Publix grocery store within walking distance, and a few restaurants nearby.

It is a one-mile walk to Clam Pass Park on the beach. There is no charge to enter the park, and there is no charge for parking with a beach parking sticker. I do not know the details of obtaining a beach parking sticker, although I am sure this information is available on the website. It is another one-mile walk to the beach from the park parking lot. It is a nice walk, and tram service is also provided by the Naples Grande hotel for no charge. Beach facilities include public restrooms, a food and beverage shack operated by the hotel, and beach rentals, such as chairs, towels, umbrellas, and beach equipment. We stayed at Naples Grande after this stay, and I will post pictures of the beach in that review.

Birmingham, Alabama / Embassy Suites

March 2013, Weekday, 2-nights, King corner suite #725

Status perks and check-in
I received free Internet access and two bottles of water, which is typical with Gold status. Check-in time at this hotel is 3 p.m., and I arrived a little after 3:30 p.m. The front desk agent said that my room was not ready yet, and he commented that notes on the computer said not to change my room. I told him that was probably because I had requested a quiet corner top floor room. Since I was going to be staying for two nights, I told him that I wanted to wait for the room that had been set aside for me, and then I took a seat in the lobby.

Fifteen minutes later, the bellman walked over and said that my room was ready. I walked back to the front desk and then waited several minutes because another guest had arrived and was checking in. I have waited in the lobby for a guestroom before, and it is impressive when the front desk agent brings me my key packet when the room is ready.
Welcome letter -
I covered up his last name;
obviously, my first name is not Harry!

Guestroom #725
When I got to my guestroom, I realized that the agent must have moved me to a different room, even though I had told him that I wanted to wait. This guestroom is not on the top floor (the hotel has 8 floors), and a welcome letter for another guest was on the counter in this room with the two bottles of water. The guest the welcome letter was for was a Diamond level guest. Since my status is only Gold, I was surprised that this guestroom would have been for a Diamond guest, because I did not think the room was very nice.

When I called the front desk later to ask which guestroom I had originally been assigned, the female agent said that information was no longer on the computer. I called because I was curious, and because I wanted to let the agents know that when I had said that I wanted to wait for the room that had been set aside for me, that I had meant it. She told me that this is one of their better suites. I sympathize with guests who end up with a basic room at this hotel!

The furnishings in the guestroom were old and dingy looking. The room was not very clean, nor was it well maintained. The entire guestroom needed to be updated, in my opinion. The bedding looked clean, and the bed looked comfortable, so I decided to stay.

Here are the details of the guestroom furnishings and condition.
Living and kitchen area:
- Full size couch, which I never sat on because it was very worn and did not look clean.
- Soft chair, end table, lamps, and armoire in poor to average condition. The bulbs in all of the lights must have been low wattage because the lighting was very poor.
- Flatscreen TV, which looked like it was in excellent condition.
- Table/desk with one desk chair and two straight back seats. The condition and cleanliness of these furnishings was acceptable.
door stop
- The door stop was broken and laying behind the door in drywall dust. This was not cleaned on stayover.
- Mini-fridge and microwave under the counter and sink. Both of these items were in acceptable working condition.
- The coffee setup on the counter had not been restocked. There was one single serve coffee packet, and only one flavored liquid creamer. Usually, I find two or three packets of coffee and two to four unflavored liquid creamers. I would guess that the flavored creamer had been left behind by a previous guest.
- Again, the lighting in this area was very poor. I don't know how housekeeping could even tell if the counters and appliances were clean, it was so dim.

The carpet looked old and dirty. There was dust and lint buildup along the walls and in the corners, and it was stained. This is one of the few hotels I have been in where I did not walk on the floors at any time without my shoes on.

Bedroom:
There was a door between the kitchen area and the bedroom that could be completely closed.

dust buildup along edges

- Tall armoire/hanging closet with hangers, and an iron and board. Other than the sticky door when opening and closing the cabinet, everything was acceptable. The iron worked, and there were enough hangers.
- Dresser with second flatscreen TV. The TV looked new, and the dresser looked old. It was moderately scratched, and again, the carpet corners had considerable buildup of dust and dirt.
- An undamaged folding luggage rack was open next to the dresser in front of a full length mirror.
floor stain
- The king size bed and pillows were comfortable. The outlets and lamps on the headboard worked. There was a large stain on the floor next  to the bed.
- Nightstands with a telephone and an alarm clock radio. I did not check or use the alarm, so I do not know if it worked. The radio was on when I arrived. The volume was low and the noise was static, as though no one had realized it had been left on.
- Vanity with sink, mirror and bath soap. The wood front of the vanity had water spots and a few scratches on it.
- Sliding glass doors opened to a small balcony area. There was just enough room to step out on the balcony. The sliding door track was grimy, and there were many Asian lady beetle bugs on the windows and curtains. Some were alive, although most were dead.

I killed a couple of the bugs before I realized there were many live ones, so then I called to ask someone to come and vacuum the bugs out. When I returned to my guestroom later, a couple lights were on as though someone had been in the guestroom; however, most of the bugs were still there.

Asian beetle bug

From what I saw in areas like the window track and the room corners, it looked like housekeeping at this hotel needed a lesson on how to use a vacuum hose nozzle.

Asian beetle bugs

I usually leave a tip for housekeeping, and I had a difficult time deciding whether to do so for this stay. On one hand, I did not think it was deserved, and on the other hand, I thought if I left a tip, my room might be cleaner the next day. In the end, I decided to leave a tip, and it did not make any difference. The guestroom cleanliness was just as poor the next day as it had been when I arrived. The coffee, however, had been restocked with two packets of regular coffee and four unflavored creamers.

Bathroom:

The bathroom was spacious except for the way that the door opened against the toilet seat.

- Long vanity and mirror with bathroom amenities. The vanity was clean; however, it was severely cracked the entire length along the back.
- Tub/shower combination. The tub and shower curtain were clean. There was ceiling damage in a couple spots above the shower.
- The toilet was clean. Since the door did not open past the toilet, it needed to be closed in order to use the toilet.
- Hairdryer. A decent quality hairdryer was hanging in a bag on the back of the door.
- Towels. The towels and washcloths were clean, unstained, and good quality.

Food & Beverage
I attended the evening social hour the first evening of my stay. Low quality wine was served, as well as mixed beverages and beer. I did not inquire about the beer or liquor brands. Snacks included tortilla chips and guacamole, and cheese and stale crackers. I thought breakfast the next morning was just as unsatisfactory. I suppose the omelet I had (well, that I had ordered anyway - I did not eat it after tasting it) would have been okay, if it had not been cooked until brown because the vegetable ingredients did look fresh. I thought the morning coffee was weak and watery, and I did not finish that either.
Calamari Salad from Ruth's Chris

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is located in this hotel, and I had soup and salads there. The service at Ruth's was exceptional both times that I visited. The first evening, I ordered the Calamari Salad to go. The second day, I had the Lobster Bisque and the Harvest Salad for lunch. All items were good quality and flavorful.

Fitness center
The fitness center was open 24 hours. There were several working cardio machines with cardio theater. The room also contained weights, a water cooler (no cups the first day I visited), towels, and a flatscreen TV. The sani-wipes dispenser was empty both times I visited.

I did not have any trouble getting a cardio machine in the afternoon; however, the machines were all in use between 6 and 7 a.m. both mornings.

Business center
I thought the business center was excellent. I have stayed in some Embassy Suites hotels where I could not print documents on my own for no charge. This business center had two computers and a fast laser printer. It also contained a stapler and other office supplies.

Public areas and overall
The plants in this hotel were in excellent condition, and the atrium decor was great. Embassy Suites hotels always have a nice atrium area; however, the atrium in this hotel was more beautiful than many I have stayed in. There were even plants above the guest reception bar and breakfast counter. The lobby view from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse was great.

Other than the great plants, the cleanliness and condition of the public areas were like the guestroom. I was worried about my stay from the start, because of what I observed when I entered. The furniture by the entrance was worn, dated, and unclean. There was debris on all of the floor mats and rugs, and there were spots on the floors that needed to be cleaned. I realize that some of imperfections I have shared here did not affect my stay, such as the cracked vanity; however, for what this hotel charges, and the image they want to project, I thought the condition was unacceptable. The condition of the furnishings I saw in this hotel, do not match what is shown on their website.

Another thing I did not like was that there was no parking when I returned to the hotel the second evening after dark. I had to park near the bank next door, around the side of the building. The valet parking sign at the entrance says that valet parking is for Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, and the hotel page does not list valet parking as an option.

I chose this hotel because it was in an excellent location for the businesses I needed to visit. I had also considered the Marriott Courtyard in Homewood, which was almost as close. I decided to go with the Embassy Suites since I would be staying two nights, and I figured I would like the extra room in the suite. In hindsight, I should have kept both reservations (either could have been canceled up to 6 p.m. day of arrival) until after I had checked in. If I hadn't canceled the Marriott Courtyard reservation beforehand, I probably would have left the Embassy Suites and went there.

Romulus, Michigan - DTW Airport / Embassy Suites

February 2012, Friday night, King Guestroom #310

Status perks
I received a small basket delivered to the room, which contained microwave popcorn, two full size candy bars, and two bottles of water.

Guestroom
This hotel only has three floors, so our guestroom was on the top floor. I was somewhat concerned about our stay at check-in because as a Gold member my key packet was not prepared when we arrived, even though there were many prepared packets at the counter, and it was almost 5 PM. Additionally, when the agent started to assign my room, he chose 148 on the bottom floor, and my profile states: high floor, away from elevator. When I saw him write this out, I asked if he was assigning me a bottom floor room, and he said yes. I commented about my preferences and the prepared key packets. He said that my packet should have been prepared with the others, and he did not know why it had not been. He said that the hotel was sold out; however, after a bit of maneuvering on the computer, he was able to assign me to a room on the top floor.

I was very happy with the guestroom. It  was comfortable and quiet. The kitchen counter area contained a coffee maker, microwave, and mini-fridge. There was no sink, which is unusual for an Embassy Suites. The fridge did not have a temperature control, and we had to be careful what we put inside because some of the items froze.
two flat screen TVs

There was a desk/table with three chairs (one office style, and two kitchen style) next to the counter. The room also contained a comfortable couch and soft chair. A soft coffee table/footstool was in the center of the room. All of the furnishings in the room looked new, and they were comfortable.

A door, which could be closed, led to the bedroom, and the bathroom was at the other end of the bedroom. The vanity and sink were located outside the bathroom in the bedroom area. The bathroom area where the shower and toilet were located was very small. The bed was supremely comfortable--the sheets were silky smooth, and the mattress was great! This was one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in at a hotel in a while.

Everything in the room was clean except the carpet looked like it needed to be vacuumed. I observed small bits of debris in more than one spot on the carpet. The room was very soundproof. I was surprised that with the hotel at full occupancy, we never heard any noise form the hallway or anywhere else.

Food & Beverage
A stay at any Embassy Suites includes an evening reception with free cocktails and snacks, and breakfast. At this hotel, the evening reception was from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. We were given a card at check-in for the cocktails and for breakfast. The card said it was good for three beverages. The bartender initialed the card the first time we presented it; however, she did not require the card after that, and she did not allow guests only three beverages. The wine quality was good (I tried the Merlot and Cabernet), and several mixed drinks were offered as well. There was a soda machine and a coffee machine set up near the snacks. The snacks included fresh vegetables and dip, nachos and bean dip, and a couple different kinds of snack mix.

In addition to the omelet station in the morning, there were scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast sticks, and cold items. Cappuccino was also available in the coffee machine.

The lobby/seating area for breakfast and the reception was comfortable. Even though we had been told the hotel was full, the area was not crowded in the evening or in the morning.

Airport shuttle
We stayed at this hotel because I had an appointment at the airport in the morning (GOES interview). The interview was in the north terminal, and the shuttle service worked out great. I easily found the US Customs and Border Protection office by baggage claim, and then returned to the shuttle pick up area with no problem.

Overall
We thought this hotel was a great value. The AAA rate of $132 included the evening reception, breakfast, and the shuttle service. There is no parking or Internet charge at this hotel. I was surprised that there was no charge to use the Internet because usually when I stay at Embassy Suites, I need to sign in to accept the charges, and then it is removed from my bill since I am a Gold HHonors member.

I had read online before our stay that this is not a typical Embassy Suites hotel. The only thing about our stay that was different from other Embassy Suites stays, was the design of the building (and, the free Internet). Usually, Embassy Suites are tall buildings with a center atrium where the reception and breakfast is held. And, the guestrooms are usually a little larger with a sink in the kitchenette area. Even though the building design was not typical, we were very happy with the guestroom and our stay.
