Holland, Michigan: Staybridge Suites

December 2019, King bedroom suite #401, Weekdays, 2-nights

Reservations, arrival, platinum perks

I had reserved a one-bedroom king guestroom, as the price was good, and I did not want to hope for an upgrade from a studio suite. I think the only room type better than this for an upgrade, would be a two-bedroom suite, which we did not really need for the two of us. This was not offered, and we did not ask. The 500 platinum bonus points posted to my account shortly after check-in. The check-in process was efficient, and the associate was friendly.

King one bedroom suite #401

This suite is located on the top floor in the corner, which is exactly my profile preference. The setup was comfortable and spacious. I was glad we had a top floor guestroom, as I had read reviews from other guests about the noise overhead. We did not hear any bothersome noise during our stay. The only noise we heard was an occasional door closing in the hallway, and the noise by the trash dumpster in the mornings. The first morning, we heard the dumpster being emptied, and the second morning, the person plowing the parking lots parked in that area. Neither of these noises bothered us much, and we fell right back asleep. I only mention this, in case you are a super light sleeper and want to stay away from this corner of the building. Although we were near US-31, we did not hear any traffic noise.

The ice maker was not on in the fridge when we arrived, and the front desk agent gladly fulfilled my request for ice when we first arrived. Coffee, condiments, two dishwasher tablets, dish soap, paper towel, and dish cloths were provided. We not have housekeeping come to our room, and we were able to get a second day's supply of coffee from the front desk.

Paper on barstool in suite 401 at Staybridge Suites Holland

This guestroom did not initially look dirty, although after we got settled, it appeared the room had not been cleaned thoroughly. I stepped on a small piece of broken glass on the kitchen floor that evening while barefoot. Fortunately, I immediately felt it and quickly lifted my foot without getting cut. There were place settings for four in the cupboards except for the coffee cups and wine glasses; there were only three each of those. Possibly, the piece of glass I stepped on was from a broken wine glass before our stay, although I do not know for sure. We also found a piece of crumbled paper/trash on one of the bar stools with personal information on it. It seems like if the stools had been moved to vacuum, this paper would have been found. Some guests stated a similar suite cleanliness experience in reviews on the IHG hotel website.

We liked the suite setup, although there were a couple of minor issues with the room, which did not cause too much inconvenience. The desk phone did not work. The phone in the bedroom worked, and I reported the other one when we checked out, so I imagine this has probably already been fixed. The bedroom door does not close tightly because the door frame was not installed correctly. Again, this was not a huge deal, and probably not something I would have even noticed. My husband noticed, as he tends to get up before me and shut the door (he actually noticed this before that though). The thermostat is located on the wall behind the living room TV. This was probably the most annoying inconvenience, and not something I would want to deal with for more than two days (I like to adjust the heat up when awake and down when sleeping). We had to turn the TV set away to reach it, and even then it was difficult to read the control from an angle and leaning over the armoire/stand.

Overall, we thought this was a great room. We really liked the bathroom shower!

Food & Beverage

Breakfast was served cafeteria style in to-go bags to take back to the room. Staff wore gloves, and the floor was marked with 6' spacing. The offerings were decent, although it was difficult to see what was available, and the kitchen worker did not help any. When we did ask questions, she provided short and vague answers. They were out of milk the first morning. I am listing the items that I learned were available during the two mornings of our stay: Fold-over cheese egg omelets, scrambled eggs, sausage (one morning only), minimal whole fresh fruit, Chobani yogurt, hard boiled eggs (one morning only), apple juice, Nature Valley granola bars, and packaged Pillsbury rolls. If you do not see something you want, I suggest asking to see if it is available, since there was not a list and everything was not visible.

Evening social food at Holland Staybridge Suites
during COVID-19 when inside dining was closed

We thought the food offered in lieu of the evening social was disappointing. Small to-go lunchable type snacks were on the counter at the front desk with bottles of water and canned soda. We thought individual portable salads with a meat topping would have been a nicer option. Or, maybe they could have offered a choice of snack type!

Pool area

The front desk agent let us in to the pool area, as capacity was limited. You could either sign up beforehand, or just call to check and see if it was available. We visited both ways, and we were the only ones in the area both times that we went.

Misc. and overall

This is a newer hotel with some comfortable features. It is located within walking distance of the Dutch Village and a shopping center. The hotel is about seven miles from the state park and beach on Lake Michigan. There are paved trails along Ottawa Beach Road and Perry Street, along with several parks and a nature preserve. There is easy access to US-31.

Let me know if you have any questions!
