San Antonio, Texas: Hampton Inn & Suites Riverwalk, Dining, Attractions

October 2023, weekdays, two nights, king suite 727

Reservations, arrival, diamond perks

I had two reservations for this stay, because one night was a paid stay, and the other night was a points redemption. The same guestroom type was not available both nights, so I had to reserve two different room types. I wanted to reserve a [king] balcony room; however, since a balcony room was not available, I reserved a Jr. suite with a king bed, and a Queen double. I called the hotel a few days ahead of time to make sure the stays were linked together, and to check the availability of a balcony guestroom. Although there were no balcony guestrooms available, the agent told me she could assign us the same Jr. suite for both nights, so we would not need to change rooms. She said this would probably be on floor 3.

When I checked in on the app the next day, the only available guestroom choices were as the agent had stated; guestrooms 320 and 321. On floor 3, guestroom 320 overlooks the roof of the building next door, and 321 sets back in the building corner. I chose guestroom 320 to complete the check-in process. We had to go to the front desk when we arrived to complete check-in, because we needed an elevator key. The agent did not say anything about my guestroom location or type, although she did say something about it being the room I had chosen when I checked in on the app. Imagine my delight when she handed me a key for guestroom 727! We had been upgraded to a one-bedroom suite in a much better location. I also received bottled water and snacks.

I had a difficult time choosing a hotel and guestroom, so I am sharing a couple photos of the hotel and guestroom diagrams with labeled details. The Hampton Inn is located in the same building as Home2Suites. I originally chose Home2Suites, because we like the roominess and full kitchen that brand offers; however, I changed to the Hampton Inn, because it did not look like the Home2Suites guestrooms had balconies. Both hotels do have balcony rooms, although there are more balcony guestrooms in the Hampton Inn, and these rooms are also closer to the river.

King one-bedroom suite #727 in Hampton Inn San Antonio Riverwalk

One bedroom king guestroom 727

This is a great guestroom with a decent view of the pool and partial view of the river. It was quiet, and the sleep quality was excellent. There were only a couple of inconveniences with the room: the bedroom did not have a door, and there was no light at the work desk. If you want to work at the desk with light, this is a bit difficult; even with all the lights on.

The living room seating was comfortable, and the guestroom was clean. The wifi worked well.

The bathroom had a standup shower with glass doors. Bath amenities and plush towels were provided. Coffee and supplies were provided in the sink area next to the living room.

Food & beverage

Hampton Inn and Home2Suites share the breakfast area in this hotel. Food is available on both sides of the very large room. I am not sure if one side is supposed to be designated for each brand. When we checked in, the agent told us we could eat from either side. The area on the right side was always less busy than the left side. Both sides had beverages, hot and cold cereals, and hot egg dishes.

Double Standard sidewalk menu

Riverwalk dining, etc.

We had food from a couple of restaurants along the riverwalk: Yard House, and Double Standard. The pizza from Yard House was merely okay, and the The Double Wedge from Double Standard was amazing. I wish I had taken a photo of the salad, and not just the menu. Be aware, however, that the Double Standard sidewalk menu is incorrect. That menu says that the cost is $2 more to add chicken, and we were charged $4. The inside menu has the price listed as $4. When I asked about the $2 wording on the outside menu, the bartender just said, "Oh, that would be a great deal." Hmm, well, that's what we thought, too. We thought it was a Happy Hour special. Apparently, it is a "bait-and-switch," as my husband calls this type of advertising.

Off The Saddle margarita at Lone Star Cafe, San Antonio Riverwalk

There are a lot of margarita specials along the riverwalk, although most of the beverages are blended/frozen/pre-made. We prefer freshly made unblended margaritas, and found great Happy Hour specials at Lone Star Cafe! If you are looking for a place to buy a bottle of wine, or similar, I suggest Liquors on Main. The have a great selection, and the best pricing we found in the riverwalk area.

There is no charge to visit the outside plaza area or the church at the Alamo. You need to have an entry ticket for the church, which you can get online, or at the booth located at the Alamo Plaza entrance. We watched a couple of demonstrations by volunteers in the plaza area next to the Alamo gift shop.

Los Cucos Mexican Cafe bar menu in Seguin, Texas

We had another dining visit on our way to San Antonio that did not honor their posted menu: Los Cucos Mexican Cafe in Sequin, Texas. We stopped for a late lunch after 2:00 PM, and were seated in the bar. We did not ask to sit in the bar area, and this was not our preference. After we saw the bar menu on the table, however, we thought this had been a good thing, as we wanted to order one item from the Happy Grub menu (along with food from the regular menu, as well). Even though these menus were placed on all the bar tables, and the menu clearly says "bar area only," our server said we could not order from that menu unless we were seated at the bar. Los Cucos is a chain restaurant, and this visit caused us to never want to visit one again. If the food had been delicious, I would consider a different location in the future; however, the food was not that good. This was one of the few times we did not take our leftovers with us.

Hampton Inn Riverwalk breakfast room and view

Misc. and overall

I am sharing a couple more photos of the Hampton Inn breakfast room, and the river view above. The hotel across the river is the Holiday Inn. Marriott Courtyard is located next to Holiday Inn (not visible in photo). We enjoyed our stay in San Antonio. This was our third stay on the San Antonio riverwalk, and every hotel we have stayed in has been great. Previous stays include: Marriott Rivercenter, Towneplace Suites by Marriott (one block from the river), and Hyatt Regency.

Lock bridge on San Antonio Riverwalk

We thought the lock bridge along the river was a bit crazy!
