Petoskey, Michigan: Hampton Inn & Suites

View from guestroom 304 Hampton Inn Petoskey

 March 2023, Sunday-weekend, one night

We previously stayed in this hotel in whirlpool guestroom 120 in January 2019. You can find details from that stay in the following link. The guestroom photos on the website were a bit incorrect before that stay, and it looks like some of those errors have now been corrected. This time we reserved a king bed studio suite with sofa bed.

Arrival and diamond perks

When my check-in notification arrived a couple of days before our stay, we were being assigned an odd numbered guestroom on floor three. Odd numbered guestrooms face the parking lot, so I ignored the check-in notifications. When I checked the app a few hours before our arrival, we had been assigned guestroom 304, which is on the side of the building facing the water. If the room we received was an upgrade, then some guestroom photos on the website are still incorrect. A king study suite shows a balcony door in the photos, and the guestroom type I reserved is $10 more than a king room that says bay view. None of the guestrooms actually say they have a balcony, although you can see the balcony door in the photos. The two even numbered guestrooms at each end, on floors two through four, have a balcony. The front [odd-numbered] guestrooms, like the room initially assigned to me through the app, do not have a balcony. I confirmed that our guestroom had a balcony when we completed check in at the front desk. The clerk was friendly and professional. She recognized my status, and provided waters and a snack.

This hotel has four floors. Remodeling was taking place during our stay, and I did not inquire about a guestroom on the top floor. We did not hear any noise overhead, and it is possible renovations had already started on that floor. There were many guests staying on our floor. We had not thought about the fact that spring break was starting the week of our stay. There were several families with children in the hotel. We heard children running down the hall only once during our stay. Overall, it was a quiet evening.

Although the guestroom was a bit tired looking, it was comfortable, and very clean. It was spacious, and we had a decent view from the balcony. The room was well soundproofed.

Food & beverage

Breakfast is included at Hampton Inn, and items the morning of our stay included: cereals, oatmeal, cheesy omelets, waffle maker, pork sausage, yogurt, fresh fruit, and beverages. The pork sausage was not as greasy as the last Hampton Inn we had stayed in; however, I missed not having hard boiled eggs.

Pool area

The inside pool is located on floor two, the same level as the hotel lobby. The whirlpool tub was closed, and it looked like they are planning to remove this altogether, as this feature is no longer listed on the hotel website. The closed off tub was located near the window on the bay view side of the pool area. The pool area was spacious with plenty of loungers and tables with chairs. The bay is visible from some of the seating areas around the pool.

Misc. and overall

In Petoskey, we have stayed in this hotel, Holiday Inn Express, and Stafford's Perry Hotel (along with a few campgrounds, as well). We think all three hotels are decent properties with different features. Stafford's is closer to town with great bay view rooms; however, it is also more expensive, unless you happen to snag a great promotion like we did when we stayed there in February 2021. The view is decent from Hampton Inn, and there are sidewalks with crosswalks, making it easy to walk to the parks and downtown area. Holiday Inn Express is farther out of town, and they have a complimentary shuttle. The website photos for the Holiday Inn Express look impressive; however, we liked Hampton Inn better. The staff was more professional, and the hotel was much cleaner and better cared for.
