Montrose, Illinois: Montrose Village Campground

We had originally planned to just sleep in a Walmart parking lot or someplace similar for this one night. I learned about this self-service campground, with a minimal overnight rate, shortly before our trip, and we decided to stay here instead. The information I had read online from previous campers, said that it is $5 for a primitive site, and $15 for electricity. I could not find any actual information or a website for the campground.

There was a self-registration box, as others mentioned. This is on the front of the building with flush toilet restrooms. We paid $15 for a power site, and set up on site #4. I deposited a check, which was processed from our account about 10 days later. There is also a donation box for [almost free] firewood.

Campsites

Sites 1 - 4 are full hookup sites in close quarters. Fortunately, we were the only camper in this area the night of our stay, so we did not have close neighbors. The non-electric sites are waterfront sites, which would have been nice, except the sites are not trailer friendly. The ground is very uneven and hilly. There are probably around six waterfront sites, although I did not actually count them. We observed several people fishing in the lake, and one car arrived and set up a tent that evening. He also had a campfire with the wood provided. We opted not to have a fire, as it was a bit breezy on our site.

The sewer drains on the four full hookup sites looked new. There were two water spigots between sites (between 1 and 2, and 3 and 4), so if someone had arrived for site 3, we would have had to use our water Y so that we could both get water. Site 4 is the only site that provides a view, as the other three sites would be looking at the back side of the [very close] camper next to you.

Misc. and overall

This campground is near I-70, and is easy to access. The interstate noise did not bother us, although the train whistle overnight woke me up every time (my husband slept through it)! We thought this was a great stopping point for our trip, and we would definitely stay here again, when this is on our route. Other than the overnight train whistle, this was a peaceful stay.
