Arrival and diamond perks

We reserved a basic double bed guestroom for three adults, and received an upgrade to a city view guestroom three days before arrival. This hotel was an easy half mile walk from Moynihan Train Hall. We exited the train hall on 9th Street, and headed north. 

I had the mobile key, and stopped at the front desk to get waters and cookies before going to the guestroom. This took almost five minutes, even though there were five or six agents behind the front desk and no guests in the area. The agent who assisted me did not smile, request my name, or look up my reservation. The reason it took so long is because staff members were looking at their computers or otherwise pre-occupied, rather than paying attention to lobby activity.

Two double beds city view 3110

This is a basic tiny guestroom in New York City. There was barely enough room for our luggage and three guests. The only seat in the guestroom was a chair at the desk next to the TV. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for a large person to sit in the desk chair at the foot of the bed and work. The guestroom was satisfactory, at best. The bed was not very comfy, although it was not awful, either.

The armoire under the TV contained a coffeemaker with supplies and a small fridge. There was a small wardrobe closet in the corner of the guestroom at the foot of the bed by the window. A safe was located on the shelves between the beds.

Although the bathroom was small, the shower was nice. There was no heat in the bathroom, however, so it was chilly. The light in the bathroom was on a sensor, which we could not figure out how to change. If you entered the bathroom during the night, the overhead light would automatically come on. This was very annoying! I would much rather have a nightlight, than have a blinding light come on when half asleep.

This guestroom is not very soundproof, and we could hear all activity in the hall. Additionally, the fire alarm went off at least four times after we had gone to bed. There was an announcement every time, which made it sound like the issue was being investigated. I finally got an answer at the front desk after I called, and the person I spoke with said it was a false alarm. Even so, the alarm still went off a few more times, and several fire engines arrived and stopped in front of the hotel below our window. This was all quite disturbing.

 Food and beverages

The diamond food and beverage perk was nice. Since there were three of us, and hotel breakfasts are often larger than we need, I decided to place an order for two meals for pickup. According to the room service menu, our breakfast would have been a few dollars more than the $32 credit, after I added a tip to the slip. We did not receive any charges for food, and the flavors were excellent.

Misc. and overall

This building is old, and there were a few minor dings in our guestroom. The lights between the beds looked tacky because there were two different bulb types in the fixture. This hotel stay was acceptable, and also disappointing. I would probably not choose to stay in this hotel again. For the cost of a hotel in NYC, I expected more of an elite experience. Staff does not provide good service, based on our experience. In addition to the non-courteous check-in we received, I also tried to call this hotel several times before our arrival. I could not ever reach a person, and one time I was on hold for over seven minutes before I hung up.

It was an easy one-mile walk to Manhattan cruise terminal with our luggage the day we departed. I will have a post out with information about the Carnival Venezia cruise ship next.
