Arrival
Our GPS identified the campground as being on the north side of the road farther east than where it is actually located. We knew it would be on the south side of the road, and the park signs were highly visible, so this did not cause any problems. The dirt road back to the campground, however, is longer and narrower than we had realized. Fortunately, no trailers were leaving when we arrived. 😊
Michigan state forest campgrounds are all first come, first serve, so we planned our trip to arrive on a Wednesday afternoon. There were about five sites taken when we arrived, and the campground was full when we left on Saturday.

Campsite 12
My husband wanted this campsite because there is a short path directly out to Lake Huron from the site. I did not initially want it, because it is not very trailer-friendly (there are lots of trees), the ground cover is dirt and pine needles, and you cannot actually see Lake Huron from the campsite. In the end, we both loved it!

This campsite is private and spacious. It is also fairly level except where it slopes down to the trail at the edge of the site. We got our camper as close to the trees as possible, because we wanted to be able to use the area in front of our trailer. There is not much room beside the trailer on the door side where the mat is, because that is where the ground slopes down to the trail. The placement of our trailer is the only place on this site for a camper, unless you park farther forward near the road.

The path to the lake was not very long; the beach is just on the other side of the trees in the photo above. It was easy to carry chairs and belongings to the beach.
Beach when you come out the path from campsite 12 |
The beach was sandy for the most part. There were some areas of stones along the shore, and there were many stones in the west corner of the bay.

There was a tag on the post at this site that expired the day we arrived. The campsite was empty. Apparently, someone camping on this site before us had departed that morning.

Info about some of the other campsites
There are about five sites in this park that will accommodate a larger trailer/RV. The website says there are three; however, we observed more than that. There are a couple near the entrance, and there are the two sites shown in the photo above. There are paths to Lake Huron from the two sites in the photo.
There is also a large open area in the center of the campground that looks like it can accommodate larger trailers. This area makes up several campsites, and I am not sure where the boundaries are. The area is level, grassy, and sunny.
View from campsite (14?) at DeTour State Forest Campground |
We observed one campsite with a view of the water (photo above). I am not certain of the number of this site; it may be site 14. It is between the site we had (#12), and the two in the photo with campsite 19. It is a pull through site across the road from the lake path. There are trees behind this site, so there is privacy from the grassy open area I previously mentioned. The site itself is not very big. I do not think we could have fit our trailer, our screened canopy tent, our son's tent, and both our vehicles on this site.
Recreation
I already mentioned the lake! We observed people on the water in kayaks during our stay, although we did not see anyone swimming. There is a place to park near the park entrance next to a hiking trail, and there are many things to see nearby. We visited Drummond Island, the Soo Locks/Sault Ste Marie, and Cedarville. I will share info about those areas in my next post.
Let mw know if you have any questions!
