Midland, Michigan: Holiday Inn

 March 2021, Weekend, One-night, Whirlpool guestroom #325

This was our fourth time staying in this hotel. We have been in rooms 325, 423 (twice), and 525. You can find more information and photos from our previous stays in the following posts: December 2020, November 2013, and October 2011

Reservations, check-in, arrival, platinum perks

I reserved a whirlpool tub guestroom online, with a request for the top floor (we loved guestroom 525 in December!). Since I completed digital check-in for this stay before we arrived in Frankenmuth...where the agent had implied that rooms are auto-assigned with digital check-in, and could not be changed...I decided to call the hotel in Midland to see if they had received my request for a top floor room. The person I spoke with said we were on the third floor, and that was the only jacuzzi guestroom available. Shortly before our arrival, I noticed that the IHG app said our room was available. I had not received a notification before opening the app. When I checked in, the agent asked if I wanted the bonus points for my on-site amenity.

The only thing that was different in the guestroom this stay, was the K-cup coffee brand. It was Green Mountain instead of Rainforest Alliance. I am not going to list all the room details, as you can find that information in the previous posts.

Although this guestroom had the same setup as our previous stays, the room did not smell clean this time. It had an old, stale odor; the way a room smells when the furniture and/or carpet is old or dusty and needs to be cleaned. Fortunately, we travel with slippers and air freshener. We also keep disinfectant in our travel bag, which is something new since the pandemic started. The odor did not seem terribly overpowering, so I used the disinfectant and air freshener, before we departed for dinner.

The odor was still present when we returned, so we cracked the window, and left it open for the rest of our stay. This gave us fresh air to breathe. The bedding looked clean and smelled fresh. The sheets were silky soft, and the pillows were good quality.

It took a long time to fill the whirlpool tub; almost 20 minutes. We liked the spacious shower.

The remote in this guestroom did not work to power the TV on or off. The power button on the TV worked, and then the remote worked for the volume and channels, so we did not call anyone to the guestroom.

Overall

This stay was quite different from our previous visits. Sadly, we did not enjoy it as much. The hotel seemed to be quite full, and it was very noisy in the halls. Digital checkout was not available the next day, so I checked out at the front desk. I told the front desk agent about the unpleasant room smell and the malfunctioning remote. She apologized, and said I should have called them. She said they could have had Febreeze sent to the guestroom. I received a "Digital Checkout" email from IHG over 24 hours after we checked out, just like after our last IHG stay.

If anyone has questions, please let me know!
