Charleston, South Carolina: sites, activities, dining, breweries, Happy Hour

December 2019

Marion Square December 2019

Sites, transportation...

We visited several areas from the Homewood Suites; we walked everywhere, or took a no charge bus ride on the DASH. The bus stopped just north of our hotel on Spring Street, just south of the hotel at the Visitor Center, and at several other areas around town. You can find more information on the transportation website.

Some of the sites and parks we visited: Marion Park, Colonial Lake Park, The Battery/White Point Garden, Public Pier, Waterfront Park and the Pineapple Fountain, Washington Square, Calhoun Mansion, Liberty Square, Fort Sumter National Monument, Old Charleston Jail, Rainbow Row, alleys and hidden passages, the Walled City area, graveyards, and more.

One of the alleys. Stoll's, maybe; I do not recall which one for sure!

We enjoyed walking to the sites, so we could also enjoy the brick and cobblestone streets and architecture along the way. There are several guided tours available, and information is plentiful online, if you want to plan your own tours, like we did. We listened to some narration on our phone (information at the stops, and there are apps available for purchase), and I read information I had printed from online sources at some of the stops.

Calhoun Mansion
If you are undecided, I suggest stopping at the Visitor Center first, as they have all kinds of information and some coupons available, too.

Old Charleston Jail
It was easy to get an Uber in Charleston when we checked out of our hotel; just like it had been from our airport hotel a week earlier.

Shopping and dining

Historic Charleston City Market, runs from Meeting Street to E. Bay Street, and was much bigger than we expected. There are many stores and restaurants alongside the market, and down the side streets, as well. We found souvenirs for a decent price at the Five and Dime General Store, located on Market Street next to the city market. King Street was lined with stores, similar to Michigan Ave. in Chicago.

Sticky Fingers wings, and pork BBQ on the far plate
We visited a couple restaurants near the market on Meeting Street. Sticky Fingers Rib House and BBQ was an excellent find. We got a coupon at the Visitor Center for free wings, and we purchased a pork BBQ sandwich. Both items were delicious, and the service was great.

Maui Tacos in Charleston, South Carolina

Maui Tacos is a chain restaurant; however, their sidewalk sign caught our eye. We had never heard of this restaurant before and decided to check it out--it was another excellent choice. Their salsas are all made fresh daily, and are included with chips when placing a food order. We also shared a Don Julio pineapple margarita for $7.95. The salsa, food, beverage, and service were all fabulous.

Baker and Brewer
Smores of the World and Merman IPA
Two local breweries were within walking distance of our hotel: Baker and Brewer (Holy City Brewing) and Palmetto Brewing Co. We visited both one afternoon. The beers were great at both locations, although I preferred Holy City brews. Happy Hours were plentiful in Charleston; however, we missed most of them because they did not start until 4:00 or 5:00 PM. We tended to go out during the day, and then stay at the hotel in the evening.

This is just a recap of some of the places we visited. Please let me know if you want more information, or have any questions!
