Muskegon, Michigan / Camping, Downtown, Events...

May and June 2018

Sunset at Fisherman's Landing
As some of you know, Muskegon is one of our favorite lakeshore towns to visit! I am sharing a few photos and some new info we discovered during our most recent visit to Muskegon. You can find additional information about items of interest by clicking on the labels at the end of this post.

Camping in Muskegon

Our two favorite campgrounds in the area are Fisherman's Landing and Muskegon State Park. We usually choose Fisherman's Landing because of its proximity to town and the bicycle trail. The state park is great when we want to do some hiking or stay closer to Lake Michigan.

Seen from our campsite at Fisherman's Landing during D-Day weekend
Fisherman's Landing is in a great location on Muskegon Lake. The bicycle trail runs alongside the campground, and the campground is within walking distance of downtown and many area events. A fabulous new boat dock was installed last year, and improvements this year include a new sign, office facelift, and additional parking/stopping near the office and dump station to help eliminate congestion. Wireless Internet is also available now, although we did not have very good reception on our campsite at the corner of Pike Road and Trout Lane.

Muskegon Channel campsite 108
One of our favorites, except for the dirt ground cover
Muskegon Channel State Campground is located between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. This campground is closer to Lake Michigan; however, the boat launch is over two miles from the channel campsites, whereas, the boat launch at Fisherman's Landing is right next to the campground. Also, the bike trail is not accessible from this campground. Many of the campsites are large and secluded with views of Muskegon Lake or the channel. There are several miles of hiking trails within the park.

Brew and Ice Box bar at Pigeon Hill

Downtown Muskegon

I had my first Ice Box brand ice cream bar at Pigeon Hill in June. I tried the Green Dragon, which has Oreo and Butterfinger layers. It has been less than two months since then, and I have now also had Caramel Cashewlicious and Key Lime Pie. Yes, they are delicious! I think the $2 mini-bars are the perfect size. Pigeon Hill is my favorite brewery in Muskegon, and there are a couple more combinations I hope to try before fall.

Jim Beam Pretzel from Fricano's Sweet Shop
Last year, if you had dinner at Fricano's Muskegon Lake, they gave a discounted dessert coupon for their Sweet Shop. They were not giving those out when we visited this year. We stopped in the Sweet Shop during a bicycle ride at a later date and had adult shakes. I had the Jim Beam Pretzel made with rum (I do not like whiskey). The $7.50 cost is a bit pricey, but it is delicious!

One day while at the Farmer's Market, we received a sample of a Reuben sandwich from Laughing Tree Brick Oven Bakery. It was beyond delicious; it was so good, we had to go purchase a whole sandwich, even though it was not lunchtime yet. The bakery is only open in Muskegon at the Farmer's Market on Saturdays from 6:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Inside USS LST

Activities and events

We visited the USS LST 393 Veterans Museum during D-Day celebration the first weekend of June. The $8 admission fee was waived this weekend, and several events were scheduled, as well. This was our second time aboard the LST, and I think we were on board just as long as we had been the first time several years ago. There is a lot to see inside.

Pearl Mist leaving Muskegon
The Pearl Mist cruise ship stops in Muskegon 10 times in 2018. We happened to be out on our boat when the ship was leaving in June.

Other activities we enjoy in Muskegon include Parties in the Park, shopping downtown and at the Farmer's Market, and Muskegon Power Boat Weekend. You can find more details about the area on Visit Muskegon's webpage, or follow them on Facebook! Feel free to share this post for others ~
